Twilight sets good example to girls

Ok so I’ve only ever read the first and second books of Twilight and that was mostly due to being jetlagged in Argentina, unable to sleep, Twilight being the only book left on the hostel bookshelf. But really? Is Bella actually a good example to girls? To me she seemed flimsy and obsessed with a boy. Interested in nothing else and ignoring her family so she could get it off with vampire boy.

Can’t really believe that this story got a run. But then again…it got a reaction.

In The Twilight Saga: New Moon, lovelorn character Bella Swan gets dumped by her vampire boyfriend, sinks into depression and later flies to Italy to pursue him.
While that may sound extreme, actress Kristen Stewart thinks Bella sets a good example to girls.
New Moon debuts in theatres today.
The sequel to last year’s Twilight is expected to have an opening weekend as extreme as its storyline, judging by early interest.
{snip}
But in New Moon, Edward breaks Bella’s heart.
Months pass as Bella sits despondent at her window during the day and screams in her bed at night. In between, she finds solace with her friend Jacob Black - a werewolf.
Later, when an unexpected visitor tells Bella that Edward is in danger, she hops on a plane to Italy to save him.
When asked if Bella’s actions set a bad example for the 13-year-old girls who will be a big part of the film’s audience, Stewart says she thinks the film’s message is a good one.

“Be extreme. Go for it. I think that’s the point,” she said.
“I know that this is a movie about immortality and mortality but, like, you live once.”
The Twilight film franchise, of which New Moon is the second instalment, is based on a series of bestselling books by author Stephenie Meyer.
Many fans of the four Twilight books are girls in their teenage years and younger. Bella - who narrates the books - is the character with whom they identify.
“She has a lot of really innate female qualities,” Stewart said.
“For a character in literature, I think it’s awesome that so many girls can look up to her, because she’s fickle and unabashedly [so].”

Rachel's really exciting, super fun blog survey

So, I haven’t been posting much lately. There are a number of reasons for this - thesis stress, home stress, freelancing commitments, perfectionism, the sense that even though I’ve often prioritised blogging over the aforementioned, I really probably shouldn’t - but I’ll own up to what is: Bad Blogging Practice.

If I’m honest, boredom and fatigue have also played a big role in my absence. When I first started this blog, two years ago, it was a tentative toe in the waters of blogging as “myself” (whatever that means), under my real name.

In that time, I’ve connected with some amazing people around Australia and the world, and learned a lot about what works for me and what doesn’t. In the latter category: lifecasting or reblogging other people’s stuff without adding original comment (however effective that is elsewhere Tumblr); in the former, original writing and a kind of philosophical analysis, if hits, ‘likes’ and reblogs are any indication (prove me wrong by filling out my survey). You guys also seem to like advice and other meditations related to the writing process.

The trouble is that I’ve learned so much from this process that now, when I look at this blog, all I see is what’s wrong with it. Making the focus Me and My Writing, for one. Who would choose to subscribe to this blog when they could read one that’s about a clear topic, I ask myself? Not putting as much effort into these posts as I do into my paid work when - as I say all the time lately - the internet is “the ultimate free market”, and theoretically, that means we choose to read the best content available. Then again, perfectionism has been a major block to my writing here lately - my dashboard is full of drafts.

So, for a few weeks now I’ve seriously considered throwing this blog in, in favour of something newer, shinier and more exciting - something that capitalises on everythng I’ve learned over the past two years. And I will be launching a site focusing on my thesis research (or, more sensationally, talking about sex) in the next couple of weeks, followed hopefully not long after by a revamped portfolio website.

But in thinking and talking about this with other people, I realised something: whatever its weaknesses, people like this blog. It may not be perfect, but it has an audience - and an audience I’m rather fond of.

What direction it should go in is a question I’m yet to answer. My sense is that treating it as a kind of supplement to my other work is the way to go - reflections, inspirations and discussions around articles I’m working on and the like. The kinds of posts that are in my ‘best of’ section. I’m also considering a full revamp of the layout and possibly even the title.

But as I make those moves, I’m keen to know what you think. I’ve created a survey (yep, I’m linking to it again) asking what you like about this blog, what you’d like to see more of and what you’d like to see changed. I’ve tried to make it as quick and painless as possible - it won’t take more than ten minutes, and if you’re really speedy, I reckon you could knock it over in 90 seconds. I’d really appreciate it if you filled it out. You can also leave a comment below, if you’d prefer, or drop me an email.

Thanks in advance,

Rachel

Go on, it’s holidays and takes about 5 seconds!

I haven’t posted on here for yonks and as such my ‘tumblrarity’ has dropped all the way down to 3. Hurrah! Have gotten carried away with this thing called twitter. Not sure if you’ve heard of it? Ha. Find me @danaszy

Past two days have been @media140 conference, which has been really interesting but incredably mindblowing. Realising just now need to learn a bunch of study for spanish oral on Monday. EEPS! Changed my background to a sweet ‘mo one. Can’t wait to get home tomorrow and see the boy. Maybe a picnic is called for. It’s finally getting warm (joy!) and I think sweet dicko pool seasons will soon be underway.

For now am turning attention back to television/book/spanish. I will attempt more tumblrness soon.

I’m just a little person.
One person in a sea.
Of many little people.
Who are not aware of me.
I do my little job.
And live my little life.
Eat my little meals.
Miss my little kid and wife.
And somewhere maybe someday.
Maybe somewhere far away.
I’ll find a second little person.
Who will look at me and say.
I know you.
You’re the one I’ve waited for.
Let’s have some fun.
Life is precious.
Every minute.
And more precious with you in it.
So let’s have some fun.
We’ll take a road trip.
Way out West.
You’re the one.
I like the best.
I’m glad I found you.
Like hanging round you.
You’re the one.
I like the best.
Somewhere maybe someday.
Maybe somewhere far away.
Somewhere maybe someday.
Maybe somewhere far away.
Somewhere maybe someday.
Maybe somewhere far away.
I’ll meet a second little person.
And we’ll go out and play.
